Lizzy Gabay
Still Towns

October 26th - December 9th, 2023

Entrance presents the solo debut for painter Lizzy Gabay. Still Towns showcases seven paintings from the last two years of Gabay’s practice. While there are variations in subject and style across the works, in each one there is the presence of memory; an active memory that feels metaphorical, ubiquitous and roaming. Some compositions allow for multiple perspectives to converge in a short field, while others render a landscape vast and flat. The permeability, or spectrum of definition, across the works allows the images to exist on multiple planes at once, and legibility becomes the logic of each composition. Gabay’s poetic- imaging and continued study of the oil painting medium achieve works that emanate a quietude, even a deep solitude, akin to the experience one feels when reading a book. Joined with Gabay’s color palette, both earthy and jewel-toned, the paintings and their impressions are reminiscent of that private quietness, a transient moment paused.

Lizzy Gabay (b. 1993) lives and works in NYC. She received a BA in Fine Art from the Roski School of Art at the University of Southern California and is currently a graduate candidate at the Milton Avery Graduate School of Art at Bard college. Gabay’s paintings gather layers of times and spaces, creating compositions and subject matters from a process of poetic-imaging, collaging memory with present looking. Her latest works reflect compositions that hold multiple perspectives, exploring figures and images through their impressions and influences.
