Hannah Lee
First Language

December 02, 2021 – January 30, 2022

Entrance is proud to present First Language. For the debut solo show by Brooklyn- based artist Hannah Lee, the artist offers a series of seven oil paintings. Taking inspiration from moments in her day to day, Lee captures in her paintings various states of being that we share collectively. The scenes she depicts are not lewd, rather they are uncomfortably intimate, though it is never made entirely clear what the viewer is witnessing. What Lee chooses to put in the compositions are placed so sparingly that every object and figure is deliberate and feels necessary.

Although she is uncompromising in each detail, the revisions made during the painting process are not fully erased and the outlines of previous attempts show through the new paint. Texturally, this gives the paintings a spectral, transient quality. Other lives, not pictured, have been lived in these rooms. Something has not quite departed.

Hannah Lee (b. 1989, Madison, Wisconsin) received a BFA at Parsons School of Design in 2012. Since graduating she has participated in numerous group shows in New York, Providence and San Francisco, as well as internationally in Manilla and Tokyo. She lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. First Language is her first solo show.
